What you slather onto your skin or your family’s skin, impacts your health. Not only that, but what you put into your mouth also impacts what your health. Plus, foods that your body does not agree with, can negatively impact your health, setting you up for a lifetime of chronic health issues. Your gut takes in what it terms as toxins which enter your body, and filters them out. What your body does not want, or cannot use always take them out of your body.
If you are like our family, and struggle with food intolerances and allergies, or even have a special needs person, you may know this already, or, your may at least suspect this is an issue for your family.
I recently re-visited this issue with my special needs son, when he began two new medications that negatively impacted his gut health. It constipated him so severely, that his colon stretched excessively, and he was at severe risk for rupture, which could lead to death, which is unfortunately a serious issue in people with his genetic syndrome. I rushed him to the ER several times over this issue for about 3 weeks, while they flushed out his digestive tract; but the problems didn’t just stop there.
Once he came home for good, he struggled with diarrhea and severe mood swings.
It took me nearly a month to settle his body and mood with extra medications. Yet, ever the food is medicine mom, I added probiotics and enzymes simply to help him digest. And finally, with the use of good old-fashioned time his colon shrank back to its proper size.
Yes, sometimes the cure is worse than the treatment.
If you have a special needs child, you know the struggle of having to use medications, yet facing the side-effects they leave. Obviously, this was a difficult season for us. While I would rather not put the toxins into my son’s body, via medications, altering his body chemistry, his body protested. Getting off his medications is not possible, so, the trick becomes to not give up, and change what I can to improve his health.
They say the gut health is the doorway to health.
After our harrowing set of events, I definitely would say that I agree with that! My son’s gut was completely healthy until I found us on the medication train. But, this is life with a special needs child. Their bodies function differently than normal bodies and our jobs as parents becomes finding the next solution to equalize their health. I found this to be true even in my typical son, and my own health.
I had already adjusted his diet, which dramatically improved his early health. There was a time when my son was actually on Prevacid and 2 other reflux medications and honestly, I would do it again if I had to. But, at this time, I don’t have to because of some of the things I learned about food allergies, and how they impact the health of our children through their gut flora. This why I want to share with you the opportunity to watch Sean Croxton’s Digestive Sessions.
You can heal your kids’ bodies.
You may think that gut health is a bunch of hooey, but I am here to tell you that this information changed our family’s life. We were constantly sick, and my special needs son, specifically, was on nine medications for reflux and asthma. He was in and out of the hospital with pneumonia and once caught RSV. But, all that stopped when I changed his diet, walking away from gluten, milk, and peanuts. He. Dropped. All. Nine. Medications. But it wasn’t just him, my whole family had dramatic improvements in our health with a change in diet.
Gut health will positively alter your family’s health. All of your children will benefit, particularly the ones who are still on medications for asthma, allergies and reflux. Trust me, you will not go back, because even for us as parents, all those old aches, extra weight, mood swings, and pains you shouldn’t be feeling for your age, are quite possibly related to your gut health.
Improving your gut health may take time.
Making the shift from toxic overload with the wrong foods, to improving your family’s digestion, will change your life. Eating the right foods for your body will only improve your health, and lessen the number of colds, flu and viruses you pass around. But, it may take a few months to detoxify your body, for children, it is more immediate. You can’t go wrong when you improve your health.
