I love this great wheat bread recipe, because it is easy to make and it really tastes great! I can make it easy and then slice it and stick the slices in the refrigerator in a Ziploc for sandwiches or whatever.Truth be known, we spent several years eating gluten-free. While I used to make wheat bread, rolls and tortillas on a near daily basis, I stopped, because we were having so many health challenges in our family.
If you are still there, take heart, because there is hope. Healing your gut and learning how to change the combination of foods can bring back the wheat into your diet.
While I do prefer organic when I can get it inexpensively enough, this recipe will work just fine either way. I have made this both by hand and in a bread machine, which I really prefer when I am short on time, or when it is the dead of summer and I don’t want to run a hot oven. Plus, my bread machine has a timer on it to make the bread in about an hour, which is a gift from God some days!
Wheat Bread Recipe
Ingredients for wheat bread:
(Makes a 2 pound loaf of bread)
- 1 1/3 cups of warm water (about 80 degrees F)
- 1/4 cup of sugar or brown sugar (I have also used honey)
- 1/4 cup of oil
- 2 tsps of sea salt
- 4 cups of organic whole wheat flour
- 4 tsp of active dry yeast or equivalent
Procedure for making bread:
If by hand:
Mix the dry ingredients first, stiring to mix. Then add the wet ingredients to the dry. Stir and then knead the dough you form one large ball that is smooth and elastic. Add more flour or water as needed.
Place the dough in a bowl. Cover and allow it to rise in a warm place for about an hour or until it is doubled in size.
Punch it down on a floured surface and form into a large round loaf, placing it on a stoneware baking sheet or place the dough into two loaf pans.
Cover again, and allow the dough to rise again to twice its size. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Uncover the risen dough and place it in the oven for about 40-50 minutes or until the top is brown.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan before cutting, or you will squash it.
Slice the bread into pieces and serve with lots of butter.
If by bread machine:
Fix according to your machine’s directions, but generally, add the wet ingredients into the bread container. Then lightly add the dry ingredients on top (which will actually float). Do not stir, but close the lid and set your machine. Allow it to do the rest. All you have to do is return when it is finished!
Notice the bread made in the machine is lighter in color. I used the quick setting on this loaf, but in my machine, the crust will be darker if I cook it over a longer period of time.
What a great way to save money and your health! Even if you buy organic wheat flour at $6 for a 5 pound bag, that is pennies for a 2 pound loaf of bread.
