When you are broke, you choose your purchases carefully. Buying expensive essential oils is just not possible when you are on a tight budget. But, sometimes life just hands you circumstances like this. In my life, I have been homeless, broker than broke, broke and had some money. Probably not all in that order. 😉
One thing I have learned over the years is that I cannot do without my essential oils and my herbs, especially when I am on a tight budget. Usually, it means that I am paying money to my medical sharing plan and we do not have health insurance. Although I truly believe that remaining healthy is the best option, even as you age. So, I though about 3 essential oils I just cannot do without on a daily basis.
These oils can be used in a variety of ways and you can purchase each one for around $10. Given the uses of each oil, that is a bargain.
You cannot live without these essential oils
Peppermint oil is one of those all around oils that does amazingly great things. You can use it in three ways: on your body, as an insect repellent, and as a cleaner.
On your body
Peppermint oil is a cooling oil that refreshes sunburned skin. It also helps loosen and soothe tight muscles. Ingesting peppermint oil with a spoonful of honey or coconut oil can help your stomach digest better.
As an insect repellent
You can use peppermint oil to repel many insects and even rodents. Spraying a mixture around the door jambs and in areas where insects may get into your home with peppermint oil repels spiders and ants. Several years ago, we found out (too late, of course) that a rodent got into our house with his rodent friends by chewing a hole in an outside door jamb. After freaking out, I sprayed peppermint around the house along with other measures I will tell you about sometime. They were all eventually killed, but I do know the mint worked to keep them away from our family.
If you spray it on your carpet before you vacuum, you eliminate all fleas as well.
As a cleaner
Peppermint is a great disinfectant and it smells great! It cleans and covers up pet odors as well.
You simply cannot live without it if you want sleep, a healing oil or to boost your mood. I love the smell of lavender and so do many people. But, if I use it in the day, it will make me sleepy. So, beware of using it before you are going to drive somewhere.
As a sleep enhancer
Dab a few drops of oil on your neck or add them to a diffuser and you will sleep like a baby. This, of course, goes for children as well, although I would not give it to children under 2 years old.
To heal wounds and burns
Lavender is best at healing burns. Apply a drop directly on a minor burn, rub it on and the burn will completely disappear within 12 hours. It also works well at healing wounds, but is best applied as a salve. You can make a salve with a few tablespoons of oil and about 5 drops of lavender oil.
As a relaxer
Lavender works well in the bathtub with epsom or sea salts to relax your body. Or, used in a diffuser during anxious seasons. Just take care to not used it before you are going out and then operating a car, as it may make you sleepy.
I wrote this as citrus, but this covers lemon, lime, grapefruit or any variety of orange oils. While each citrus oil works best on certain things, citrus is a cleansing oil. Citrus works best as a detoxifier, but has other uses as well.
As a detoxifier
Citrus oil detoxifies our bodies. Lemon refreshes and balances our stomach acid if taken internally in some water. Grapefruit is also a detoxifying oil, which helps rid your body of toxins, such as cellulite. Orange also works well in detoxifying our bodies. All of these oils can be applied topically or taken internally in a refreshing drink of water. They also work really nice in the diffuser.
As a cleaner
Citrus oils, particularly lemon oil, clean well and leave a refreshing scent when used in cleaners. Add it to a spray container of witch hazel and spray on your windows for a nice glass cleaner.
These are my favorite inexpensive brands:
Adding these essential oils to your medicine cabinet will help your household stay healthy and clean for a nice price tag of $30. Are there other oils you would replace with these? Please share!
