I received in my laundry room, what used to be a white t-shirt. In my experience, general bleach has not done the job, plus using bleach is rather toxic. I wanted to use a natural solution if possible. This natural Oxiclean solution actually worked better than household bleach on my not-so-white t-shirt!
The last time I ran out of Oxiclean, I scoured the Internet for a recipe and I saw a homemade Oxiclean substitute, and I thought I would try it. Since the shirt I wanted to clean was really dirty, I slathered the solution on, but then I hung it out in the sun…for 2 days. I don’t fully know why, but it really did not work. Plus, when I mixed the solution, it turned into crystals—I think I made a C in chemistry… I know others have been able to get it to work!
But…science experiments aside, I still had a dirty shirt along with some other grungy stuff.
I read about someone using lemon juice and then simply hanging out items to dry in the sun. I had tried that before on some other stains, so I decided with this shirt I was going to kick it up a notch.
Natural Oxiclean Solution Recipe
3/4 cup of lemon juice
1/2 cup of washing soda
1 cup of water
Add the ingredients to a glass jar or bottle, place the lid on top and swirl the ingredients until mixed. Stir with a spoon if necessary until the soda is dissolved. Allow the garments to sit overnight or even better, hang on a clothes line in the sun to dry.
For old and stubborn stains, this recipe really worked for me. The old shirts are really white and look super clean. One of the white shirts I used this on, did not completely restore, but sometimes you just have to upcycle things!
Unless God brings a miracle, it may never be fully white again, but you never know;-)….Frankly, this worked better than anything store bought or homemade I have ever tried.
