I would love to buy a dehydrator, but alas, I really cannot afford one! So, I decided to try and dehydrate them in my oven.
Apple chips from the store are super expensive when you buy them in the grocery store, so you even save money using this simple technique. But, cut up several apples so that you have enough, because they are super addictive! They make a great snack and go great with nut butter for the kids (or moms).
Apple Chips Recipe
What you need
Cinnamon or cinnamon sugar
Stoneware baking sheets or a baking rack
How to make them
Turn on the oven to 250 degrees. Slice the apples super thin. Thin slices yield crispier chips and thick slices yield chewier chips. Spread the apples out on your baking sheets. They can touch sides, but you can also move them around a bit as they dry and shrink.
Cook the apples for about 3 hours, checking to make sure they are dried and lightly brown. Remove from the baking sheets and cool on a rack for best results. Lightly sprinkle cinnamon or cinnamon sugar on top.
To store, place them in a ziploc bag or glassware container in the refrigerator. These will not keep very long, because they are preservative-free.
