We forget. Many essential oils are really oils infused with herbs.
An herb is a plant whose seeds, fruits, plant parts and roots can be used for medicinal purposes, life enhancer, or as a flavor enhancer.
Herbs are medicinal plants and their parts distilled into potent essential oils. You can use herbs as seasonings on food, or as teas. You can make them into poultices, salves, or tinctures. But when it comes down to using them in essential oils, it requires good distillation in marketed oils.
The key to a good essential oil begins with its plants
Some claim that organic has little to do with making a good quality oil, but we also know that plants grown with pesticides contain those pesticides. They are distilled into the essential oil. Young Living has a strong brand of essential oils. They use their own farms and distillation methods. When asked, they do not feel the need to make their oils organic. DoTerra, on the other hand, has several organic oils.
If the pricey essential oils sold by YL and DoTerra are not in your budget, you would probably balk at paying $185 for a bottle of rose oil from Young Living. How much you spend depends on your needs and your wallet, of course. Companies like Plant Therapy and Edens Garden both carry good quality oils that do work. The average cost is around $10 a bottle, even for their organic oils; I can personally testify to their effectiveness.
What is pharmaceutical quality?
Good quality essential oils that are more distilled for purity maintain better effectiveness. If the oils are distilled multiple times, used from high quality seeds and plant parts, tested for purity and effectiveness, then you have a good quality oil.
Therapeutic or pharmaceutical quality labels are only labels. Many people refer to them as food-grade essential oils. The label itself, however, not make them high quality essential oils. Pharmaceutical quality is a label that is not regulated in the United States.
What can help you determine the effectiveness of an essential oil and its company is finding out the source of the plant parts and how they are grown. Organic labeling in our country will help you determine if the oil is from good growing practices. Generally, organic means that the plant source is high quality and possibly a non-gmo seed. Using such wisdom will help you choose higher quality oils. In effect, distillation means nothing if your plant source is poor.
