I am known for having a least a cup of coffee a day. While I know that my average of 2 cups a day, is not super high, I can remember a day when I did not drink any coffee at all. Yet, now, I have to say that many days I. need. caffeine.
With the Special Needs Life came lack of sleep, brain flips I never knew I could do, getting a medical degree without going to Med School, and well, coffee became a necessity. I worked hard at drink the best coffee I could find, making it organic, and using only stevia and coconut milk when I make mine at home. I like this brand. And yes, we love Starbucks for the record (but please join me in requesting coconut milk as a milk alternative).
There are benefits from coffee that actually help us, such as the fact that coffee is a great antioxidant. Yet, sometimes we really do need to take a break from coffee. Our adrenals thank us, and well, sometimes we get a bit wound-up…well, ok, I know I do. 🙂
So, what can we do to keep going, and yet not tax our bodies too much? Here are a few ideas to get you going (no pun intended).
Here are 10 Coffee Alternatives for when your body needs a break from caffeine:
Drink a cup or glass of green tea, which is high in theanine
Even a cup of black tea is a good coffee substitute
Use stimulating essential oils, such as citrus oils, rosemary, peppermint or basil
Drink a tall glass of water, with a squeeze of lemon, and even a little stevia
If you are eating low carb, add a spoonful of coconut oil or a pat of grass-fed butter to your mid-morning or mid-afternoon
Drink roasted dandelion tea
Add cocoa powder or maca powder to your morning smoothies
Add fresh ginger or ginseng to your meals or smoothies
Eat a handful of seeds or nuts
Take a spoonful of raw honey
Too much caffeine can:
Raise your adrenals too high, and super stress you out!
It can also create insomnia
Judge for yourself when you have had too much, and if you can’t you need a Buddy to remind you to slow down on that coffee! Then step in and use some of the alternatives I listed above.
