Spring is upon us and if you haven’t already been searching out seed companies and their catalogs, you still have time. Even in our mild climate, it isn’t too late to put your seeds into the ground.
I have been finding particular interest in buying non-GMO or Heirloom seeds. While certain companies not to be named…are buying up heirloom seed companies to make a profit, our seed supply is in jeopardy unless we join together and buy heirloom. Some may not find this particularly important, but I recently read a news article about some students who discovered 800-year-old seeds in an Indian archeological dig in Canada. You read that right. Go read the article to see a photo of the squash grown from four of the seeds. It’s huge.
If all it takes is four seeds to grow good quality food, then we are missing something when we purchase nonHeirloom seeds. If passed down properly, Heirloom seeds are healthier and truer to their original food source. Plus, heirloom seeds are nonGMO and the companies listed below are still true to being heirloom seed companies. And who knows? Perhaps you are growing your own 800-year-old vegetables.
